What is Diabetes Mellitus?

Diabetes or diabetes   is a chronic or long-term disease. This disease is characterized by an increase in blood sugar (glucose) levels to above normal values accompanied by disturbances in carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism.

Types of Diabetes Mellitus?

  • Type 1 diabetes: occurs due to a lack of insulin produced by the pancreatic beta cells. It can be caused by viral infections, autoimmune disorders, or hereditary.
  • Type 2 diabetes: this type occurs because glucose cannot enter the cells because the cells are resistant (immune) to insulin. In normal people, glucose can enter cells easily.
  • Gestational type diabetes: usually occurs in pregnant women
  • Other types of DM: Other types of DM caused by drug use, lifestyle and others.
