ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) is a gastrointestinal examination procedure using an endoscope and x-ray. ERCP is performed to detect whether there are disorders of the internal organs which include the gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas. Basically, ERCP is a combination of two types of procedures: endoscopy and x-rays that use X-rays.
When is an ERCP Procedure Needed?
You must immediately get ERCP action and treatment, if your condition:
- Gallstone Disease
- Gallstones that block the bile ducts
- Pancreatitis or inflammation of the pancreas
- Injuries or surgical complications to the gallbladder and pancreas

ERCP procedure
When declared fit to undergo the procedure, the patient will be advised to fast (usually around 8 hours) then the ERCP procedure will be carried out using an endoscope (long & flexible tube). Briefly, here is the process:
- The patient will be laid on an X-ray table and given anesthesia
- The endoscope is then inserted through the mouth and slowly pushed into the stomach, into the stomach and duodenum and ending in the bile duct and pancreas.
- The catheter is then extended into the bile or pancreatic duct, carrying a dye that will be injected into the duct
- X-rays are taken, the contrast dye functions to provide clear visualization details
