Itchy throat is a condition when you feel an uncomfortable feeling in the neck area due to an itchy sensation in the throat. This condition is generally an early symptom of a reaction to an infection.
An itchy throat can interfere with your daily activities. The tickling sensation in the neck that is left untreated will cause pain in the throat when you swallow or make a sound.
In this article, you will learn the causes, how to treat, and how to properly prevent an itchy throat so that the symptoms do not worsen.
Causes of Itchy Throat
There are many causes of an itchy throat, ranging from allergies to something to symptoms of GERD. Here are the causes of an itchy throat:
- Allergy
The effects of allergies to something can cause an itchy and dry feeling in the throat area. When you are exposed to an allergen, the body will release histamine compounds that can cause excess mucus in the throat (post-nasal drip).
Some common allergens include pollen, dust and mites, animal dander, mold or moisture, and certain foods.
- Infection
There are several infections that can trigger an itchy throat, such as colds and flu, strep throat, and fungal infections. Strep throat can also be caused by a Streptococcus virus infection.
Fungal infections are caused by Candida albicans. Fungal infections in the mouth can be identified by white patches on the tongue and reddish color at the corners of the mouth.
- Dry Air and Pollution
Dry and polluted air can also cause an itchy sensation in the throat. Not only vehicle pollution, but cigarette smoke also has an effect.
- Gastric Acid Reflux (GERD)
One of the symptoms of GERD is an itchy throat. This is caused by stomach acid rising into the throat and causing a burning and itchy feeling in the throat. This sensation is mainly felt when lying down or after eating.
- Dehydration
Lack of fluid intake in the body can also trigger a dry throat which causes an itchy feeling in the throat. Make sure you drink 2 liters of mineral water a day to maintain fluid intake in the body.
- Consumption of Certain Foods and Drinks
Avoid excessive consumption of spicy or oily foods as they can cause irritation to the throat. In addition, cold or carbonated drinks can also worsen the symptoms of irritation.
- Excessive Use of Voice
Talking or shouting for long periods of time can cause a dry throat and an itchy sensation.
How to Treat an Itchy Throat
There are several ways to relieve an itchy throat. Here are some solutions to overcome an itchy throat:
1. Drink Water
Drink warm water to soothe your throat irritation and add moisture. You can also drink herbal teas such as chamomile, ginger, peppermint and honey to soothe your throat.
A mixture of lemon water and honey can also reduce inflammation and itching.
2. Gargle with salt water
This solution can kill bacteria and reduce throat irritation. The method is to gargle for a few seconds using a solution of half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water.
3. Consume Vitamin C, Antioxidants, and Throat Lozenges
Herbal candy can help moisturize your throat by increasing saliva production. Choose sugar-free candy to maintain dental health.
Increase your consumption of foods that are high in vitamin C and antioxidants, such as strawberries, broccoli, oranges, and purple sweet potatoes.
4. Relieves Acid Reflux (GERD)
If you have a history of GERD or experience an itchy throat accompanied by other GERD symptoms, try eating small portions of food and don't eat when you are about to sleep.
You should also avoid caffeine and high-fat foods for a while. When sleeping, position your head higher to prevent stomach acid from rising.
5. Avoid Allergy Triggers
Stay away from dust, pollution, cigarette smoke, pollen, animal dander, and certain foods. When going outside, wear a mask to protect yourself from dust and pollution.
6. Reduce Excessive Use of Voice
Avoid shouting or talking for long periods of time to keep your throat hydrated and your vocal cords from getting strained. After long periods of talking or singing, rest your voice and drink plenty of water periodically.
7. Start Implementing a Healthy Lifestyle
Rest your body by getting enough sleep, at least 7-8 hours per night, exercising regularly, and consuming nutritious foods such as vegetables, fruits and meat so that all of your body's needs are met.
When Should You See a Doctor?
Don't wait for symptoms to worsen to see a doctor. If your throat feels itchy for more than a week, accompanied by high fever, difficulty swallowing or swelling, see a doctor immediately.
An itchy throat can be an early symptom of a serious illness that you may not be aware of. With proper treatment, the condition can be treated before it becomes a serious problem.
