What is self harm?

Mental Health Specialist Doctor (Psychiatrist), dr. Gabriella Tantular Sp. Usually the behavior found is cutting, burning or taking drugs or it could be behavior that can cause injury and other high-risk behaviors.

Self harm usually starts as a way to release the pressure of heavy thoughts. This behavior can provide a sense of comfort but only temporarily because the main problem that causes this behavior cannot be resolved.

Risk factors that cause self harm

Self harm can be done by anyone. About 10% of young adults have done self harm, and this is mostly done from the age of 12 years. Even though anyone can do self- harm , there are factors that are known to increase the risk of self-harm , including a history of previous mental disorders, young adults who are not under the supervision of their parents, and relatives who have committed suicide. Even so, this behavior can also be found in people who don't have the risk as above, and vice versa, in people who have these risk factors they don't necessarily do self harm .

continued dr. Gabriella Tantular Sp. KJ generally everyone can experience stress and anxiety, but some can overcome it by talking about aggravating things with family or friends, while others may have difficulty expressing these aggravating things. When we can't express things that can cause emotions such as anger, stress or anxiety, the pressure can build up and be difficult to deal with. Some people will turn this into self-harm as a way to express thoughts and feelings that are difficult to express.

The reasons for each person to do self harm can be different, but the reasons that are often found include family problems, problems with friends, bullying , depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, environmental changes such as moving schools, drug or alcohol use.

Self harm is not behavior to seek attention, often people who do self harm never say this behavior to others and it is even difficult for them to have the courage to seek help.
