Suffering from Jaw Joint Disorders? Get to Know Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Arthrocentesis

Tempomandibular Joint (TMJ) Arthrocentesis is one of the minimally invasive methods for treating temporomandibular joint disorders. It should be noted that the temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects the lower jaw bone to the skull.

When is Arthrocentesis Procedure Needed?

The following symptoms require immediate further treatment, including:

  • Difficulty opening or closing the mouth
  • Difficulty eating or drinking due to limited jaw movement
  • Pain in the face or neck or around the ears
  • The pain or ache gets worse even after undergoing other treatments.

If the patient experiences symptoms such as those above, supporting examinations such as TMJ USG or MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) may be performed to determine the severity of TMJ and as a reference for the doctor to plan actions according to the patient's condition.

TMJ Arthrocentesis Procedure

Temporomandibular Joint Arthrocentesis (TMJ) is usually performed under general anesthesia, the choice of anesthesia is based on the patient's condition, seen from the severity of the occurrence. After anesthesia, the surgeon inserts two small needles into the TMJ/Jaw Joint. One of these needles contains a sterile saline solution that is pumped into the jaw joint under pressure. While the other needle allows the saline solution to push, rinse and remove dirty fluid (inflammation) out of the jaw joint.

Advantages of TMJ Arthrocentesis
